IN CELEBRATION OF TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY

In response to the alarming statistics reported by The Trevor Project in 2022, where over half of transgender and nonbinary youth seriously considered suicide, a rate more than four times higher than their cisgender peers, a group of local LGBTQ+ stylists and allies reached out to Jen and 11 Eleven to collaborate. They were driven by a shared vision to make a difference in the lives of these young individuals facing immense challenges due to the lack of social support and affirmative spaces. With an increasing number of discriminatory laws against trans kids being considered both in Iowa and nationwide, the need for positive action has never been more urgent.

Stylists and barbers are in a unique position to offer more than just hair services; we provide a platform for self-expression, a boost in confidence, and a means for individuals to feel good about themselves. For many young people, especially those exploring their identity, a new hairstyle can be a transformative experience. Hair is not just a part of our physical appearance; it's a form of expression, a silent yet powerful language of its own. The environment in our salons and barbershops can be a safe haven, offering validation and support to those grappling with the trauma of discrimination.

In honor of Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31, we launched this special initiative in 2023 offering free hair services to trans and nonbinary students. This year the event is scheduled for April 7th and 8th at participating businesses across the metro. This initiative is open to participation from salons and barbershops, with appointments based on each establishment's availability. We encourage participating businesses to consider extending their hours to accommodate high demand. Our aim is to involve as many salons and barbershops as possible, reaching out to support as many young people as we can.

To amplify this event, we'll be promoting participating salons through our website, social media channels, and LGBTQ organizations like Iowa Safe Schools, One Iowa, and the Queer Youth Resource Center. We'll also be engaging with media outlets such as The Des Moines Register, We Are Iowa, and Little Village Magazine to bring greater visibility to this initiative.

Join us in this meaningful endeavor to create a positive impact in the lives of trans and nonbinary youth, one hair service at a time. Together, we can make the I AM ME. PROJECT a continued success in its second year, sending a powerful message of inclusion, support, and affirmation as we celebrate identity through hair styling.
